| As you go through the arch, on your right hand side, is a bright bright pink building, you cant miss it, and it is home to MexicArte. The artisans whose work is on display were chosen because they are recognized as masters of their respective trades. These are artisans that are true to their roots, but don't have access to mass marketing. You can find some of their works documented in the “Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular Mexicano”.
The owners of MexicArte visited many remote villages and learned about these artisans as they documented their work. MexicArte is currently has a close working relationship with the cultural branches of the Mexican Government, whose sole purpose is to preserve the tradition and cultural heritage of the vast array of Mexico's ethnic and indigenous communities.
By acquiring these pieces you are contributing to the welfare of Mexican artisans, strengthening their roots to their communities and helping preserve their cultural heritage. To learn more about this shop, visit their website and when you are in Akumal, please make a point to visit them in person.
