There are now about a dozen golf courses within driving distance of Akumal and the Riviera Maya and there are many more being built right now. The Mexican government wants to make it into a golfing destination and the new golf courses are going to be beautiful. They are not cutting corners at all and you can play year round.
Bahia Principe
This is a new, very large development just south of South Akumal and they are building a gorgeous 36 hole golf course right across the highway from South Akumal. It will be finished in 2009 and will be a wonderful addition to the golf courses in the area. Hopefully you can ride your golf carts there it is so close!
El Camaleon at Mayakoba Golf Club
18 holes, par 72, 6977 yards
This is the beautiful course where they had their second year PGA tournament, the first PGA tournament outside of the USA. Locals can play here for $80/round with a 10 round package.
El Camaleón is aptly named for its diverse layout and ever-changing landscape, which bends through tropical jungles, dense mangroves and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bordered by massive limestone canals. The indigenous and environmentally inspired design aspects are evident from the opening fairway, by an imposing cenoté, an ancient underground cavern that was unearthed during the initial stages of course construction.

Playacar
This is a golf course with a natural, stand-alone golfing experience unique to its own part of the world. Carved out of the dense Mayan Jungle, the Robert Von Hagge designed 18-hole championship golf course is situated amongst the lush foliage of the Yucatan Peninsula and only a few hundred yards away from the crystal-clear, turquoise ocean and the fine white sands of the Mexican Caribbean Sea.

Puerto Aventuras Golf Club

This PGA Golf course is an exciting and challenging one. This beautiful 36 par jungle golf course was designed in 1991 by Thomas Leman and is still one of the best kept secrets in the area. Please note, course is played twice for 18 holes.
The fairways and greens are covered by a smooth carpet of Bermuda grass and surrounded by palm trees, bougainvilleas, tropical ficus and lush foliage. On your daily rounds you may encounter iguanas, deer and different species of tropical birds and other local fauna.
Mayan Resorts Golf Riviera Maya

Located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, the Mayan Resorts Golf Riviera Maya is a par 3 Jack Nicklaus masterpiece. The contrast that exists with the colors of this course gives it a natural Caribbean beauty, its bunkers, with radiating white sand, and the lakes surrounded by natural stones, area part of the game, the type of green used on this course’s greens blend your target with the outlying weeds, making it a challenge to make par.

The Moon Palace Golf Club is home to the only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in Cancún, located 60 miles north of Akumal. The Cozumel Country Club is this island first golf course and the Riviera Maya's newest championship test of golf, and it took five years to be sculpted in the limestone and out the coral and saltwater marshes at the northwest shores of Cozumel island.
This wonderful golf course carved from the Maya jungle is environmentally friendly; it was carefully crafted from the surrounding mangrove, marshlands and tropical rainforest to preserve its environmental integrity and it possess very thick vegetation around it, which makes easier to collect the balls.
