Public Transportation...
No car?
If you have your own car, you are set. If not, here's how to get around:

Taxis
Taxis are everywhere and they are very reliable but they tend to be a bit pricey. They have a set price but it is wise to ask first what the cost will be. A trip from Akumal to Playa Del Carmen is usually around $30 USD. Taxis run 24 hours a day / 7days a week.

Collectivos
These are white mini vans (10-14 seaters) that ferry locals and tourists alike from Tulum to Playa Del Carmen and are an inexpensive way to travel. Just stand along Highway 307 and wave at anything large and white. If it stops, get in and tell the driver where you want to go. One will usually come by every 10 -15 minutes. Akumal to Playa $2 USD. Collectivos run daily 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

Buses
Mayab
is an inexpensive service that runs up and down the highway. No timetable, just cross your fingers!

There are a number of other buses that run up and down Highway 307 from Cancun all the way to Chetumal and additional ones that run throughout the Yucantan. The buses are a good mode of transportation; clean and comfortable, air conditioned and have movies. Bus stations are located in Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Buses run from 7:00AM until 11:00PM.

There is also a bus line that runs from the Playa del Carmen bus terminal to the Cancun airport. If you choose this transportation you could use a cab or combio / collectivo (white van) to get to the Playa del Carmen bus terminal.
Tickets are 65 pesos and the ticket counter at the airport is on the north end of the main terminal, against the windows. (North is past the Hasta la Vista restaurant, past the departure area). The bus is out at the far end, too. The ride is advertised as 50 minutes, but it can take an hour.

Limo Services and Vans
TSA is a great travel agency in town. They offer an entire smorgasbord of services.

TSA also has rental cars at various rates that you can book through them. They also can arrange daytrips to pretty much anywhere.

In the same building is the Money Exchange. You can change $US and traveler's checks here into pesos. They now offer golf cart rentals. They can provide a deluxe air conditioned Suburban to transport you to or from the airport and have a daily Akumal to Airport Shuttle. Please call or stop by for details.

Ferries
Ferries run a regular schedule to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen. There are 2 ferry companies now providing service between Play del Carmen and Cozumel. Their schedules are similar so make sure if you are buying a round trip ticket to check which company you are buying from; one may have a later or earlier departure than the other one.

Cost of a two way ticket is approximately $18 USD The ride over is about 40 minutes.
